What do “home” and “community” mean to you? Combining your ideas about these two words, with free community art activities, could help inspire the design of the new mural recently commissioned for Thompson Community Centre.
Throughout March and April, community members are invited to participate in a series of activities led by artist duo April dela Noche Milne and Dawn Lo, also known as Popo and Lola.
The first engagement activity is a zine-making workshop for nine- to 18-year-olds this Friday (March 6) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Ave. Zines are small self-published collections of text or images that are circulated minimally. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Popo and Lola will also lead art activities including a postcard-making workshop, participatory art installation and interactive social media campaign. Visit www.popoandlola.art.blog to find out when future activities will be happening. Contributions in the form of photographs, postcards, zines, paper and text-based stories and responses will be gathered and used by the artists to develop their mural design to be installed in summer 2020.
The community is also invited to connect with the artists through Instagram @popoandlola, where a series of fun, interactive activities and questions will be posted to solicit responses on the theme of “home” and “community.” Instagram participants will be entered to win prizes, including Thompson Community Centre gift certificates.
This project is presented in partnership with the Thompson Community Association and is part of the 2020 Engaging Artists in Community Program for Richmond Public Art. The program aims to support artists with socially-oriented practices and encourages the development of a wide variety of art forms for artists working within communities.
